Nickelback ‘Rockstar’

This portrait of musician Jay is as simple as it gets.  Portraiture needn’t be complicated.  Wherever possible, I live by the motto ‘keep it simple’.

At the end of my last shoot with Jay he was relaxing against the wall in the studio, in his usual nonchalant rockstar manner.  Whilst he was sitting there I brought over a single studio flash unit fitted with a bare reflector dish and angled it down on him.  This shot is the result.

Yes, it breaks some rules.  It has very little light in his eyes.  But I think the hard light, sharp falloff and attitude all give it something of a ‘rockstar’ quality about it.
